Today’s guest on the Happy Hour Podcast is Jessica Thompson and gosh I just love her. I met her for the first time this summer and since then I have loved getting to know her more from afar. Jessica is an author and has some great books out about parenting. Please get your hands on at least one of her books before the end of this year.
FROM THE PODCAST:
In this podcast we discuss how neither one of us are good at buying gifts for our husbands. At the time we recorded this I was looking for a gift for Aaron for his birthday, and I had no idea what to get him. He's so hard for me to buy gifts for.
We spent a lot of time talking about Jessica's newest book that she co-authored with her mom, ANSWERING YOUR KIDS' TOUGHEST QUESTIONS. We both realize how difficult it is to talk with your kids about things that are so hard, but boy is it so necessary.
I mention another one of her books that our family has been using for some family devotionals before advent started and we love it! This devotional, EXPLORING GRACE TOGETHER, is a great way for your family to see the gospel of grace each time you all open this book together. This will help you put the gospel into every area of your life.
Jessica and her family live in San Diego and of course you know it, I started singing {why? why? why do I keep doing this?} “where in the world is Carmen San Diego?”
For Halloween Jessica was a whoopie cushion and she tweeted a picture to prove it, and so now I'm sharing with you!
Of course we talked about SERIAL because we both love it so much. At the time we recorded there were six episodes, and now they are up to ten. If you haven't taken the time to dive into this, we both highly recommend!

I would love to win one of those books!!!!!!!!!!
I’d love to get one of her books! She’s a favorite of mine after I heard her speak at the Influence conference last year and then again at the Thrive Moms Retreat!
I would LOVE to win her books! I’m a new mom so I can use all the wisdom I can get my hands on!
I’m only half way through this podcast, but I love it so much. It is one of my favorites so far!! Her books sound amazing…they are definitely going on my to-read list. 🙂
I have heard SO many good things about Give Them Grace. I’d love to read it or any of her other books. Thanks!
Give Them Grace is one of my favorite parenting books! I’d love to read another one.
My 7 year old JUST asked me this question today: “Mom, how did the people from before Jesus’ time get to Heaven? Because they didn’t have Jesus yet to save them…” My approach has always been to be as honest as I can, tell her (and my younger daughter) what I know from the Bible as best I understand it, and to say “I don’t really know the answer to that” when appropriate. So far so good =) And I am OBSESSED with Serial! I read Rabia Chaudry’s blog, “Split the Moon” after every episode and I’m convinced (CONVINCED!) that Adnan didn’t do it. And that somehow Jay was involved, but now he’s homefree because of his plea deal and so there’s no way that truth is ever coming out.
There are a million things I want to comment.
First, your humor is the BEST. Your little quick witted responses have me laughing so hard.
Next, I am super excited to start Serial. I just added to my favorites on Stitcher!
And my kids are just entering the tough questions stage. I SO agree with you that the wisdom of a previous guest (Jen Wilkin maybe??) who said if you don’t talk about it, kids don’t think you know it. I remind myself of that often.
I would love to win any of these books!! They all look amazing!!!!!
Thanks for being awesome, Jamie!
A close friend of mine was recently raving about “Give Them Grace” – I am even more convinced that I need to read it after listening to your podcast today.
My kids are still pretty young (5.5, 4, and 2), so the questions they ask right now aren’t as complicated as I’m sure they will be as they get older, but the TIMING of their questions is something we’re working on now. In the car just the other day, my oldest daughter asks me, “Momma, but why do we HAVE to go to heaven forever?!” literally 15 seconds before we arrived at my son’s school to drop him off. I had been flustered and snappy that morning, and we were late as usual, and of course she would ask me that question when I had no time or mental clarity to answer it! I told her to keep that question in her mind and that we would talk about it a little bit later in the day. 🙂
Podcasts – I’m obsessed. I love Elise Gets Crafty, the Relevant podcast, and yours!
Thanks for all you do, Jamie! I am loving getting to know you through your podcast. I also remember sitting behind you during a session at the Influence conference this fall, which was before I started listening – I wish I could go back in time and say hi! 🙂
I love podcasts. They get me through dishes, workouts, and long days alone with a 10 month old. I listen to Happy Hour (of course…) and Around The Table Podcast every week.
I just finished the first episode of Serial – I’m HOOKED! More binge listening in my future 🙂
So glad to know that I am not the only wife/mom who is not great at gifts and food preferences for my husband and son! Look forward to your podcast every week…it is my very favorite!
Thanks Christin!
Emily beware, you won’t be able to stop listening to SErial!
Thanks Ashley and I wish we would have met toO!
Loved listening to this podcast! I love hearing Jessica she’s always so fun and has such a great heart!
Ive caught up with all the Serial podcasts and I’m even more confused on what happened. I love it though.
Tough discussions are about pornography and dating. For both my boy & girl. Eek!
Jamie! Okay first of all, I loved this podcast with Jessica. Probably one of my favorites! I have a new middle schooler, an strong willed 3rd grader, and in the process of adopting from Haiti 🙂 I need all the parenting wisdom I can get! Second of all, SERIAL! Seriously, you sold me on it and I immediately got sucked in!
Hey, besides this podcast I also love inspired to action and God centered month and the art of simple. My four faves. Thanks for offering the give away. All of the books sound great!
God centered mom podcast (not month…)
I can talk (and do) about SERIAL for like. DAYS. SRSLY. Thanksgiving week was far too long without Adnon (is that how you spell his name?)
I feel like he is so innocent but he is stuck because he can’t admit to it. AHH! What a crisis. Last week’s episode about his lawyer. So. good. My fav.
Side Note. My fam and I drove through Baltimore last weekend on our way to NJ, I asked my hubs (who doesn’t listen to Serial because he doesn’t have too. because I tell him all about it) if we could go find the Best Buy. He nearly lost his mind–he thinks that I have lost my mind. Perhaps.
I am sure that the books are super. But I would love to dish with you about Hay and Jay and Adnon.
Cheers, Meg
This was a great one. I loved all the laughing! Other podcasts I like include: Inspired to Action, Around the Table, The Art of Simple, and God Centered Mom’s .
Forgot to mention that I LOVE serial, too! I was so glad to hear someone else talking about it because I don’t know anyone who is in “real life.” These made me laugh: http://www.newyorker.com/cartoons/daily-cartoon/daily-cartoon-friday-december-5th AND http://www.thebolditalic.com/articles/6330-charts-for-people-obsessed-with-serial
I can’t get enough of Happy Hour and the Relevant Podcasts – thank you for introducing me to both:) Looking forward to binge-listening to Serial in the coming days;) I now have 2 teen girls and some of the toughest conversations have been about how to live the Christian life in their world.
And yes, if I could request one thing for Christmas, it just might be to have Jessica’s laugh as a chime on my phone!
Pick me! I’d love the books!!
Pick me! I’d love the books!!!
Such a great podcast! I’ve added the books onto my reading list!
I just found your podcast a few weeks ago and have listened to all the episodes. I really enjoy it! I do listen to Serial, one more episode left to go. I’ll admit I still have to have “the talk” with my 11 year old daughter and I’m scared to death. We’ve had talks about puberty and such but not THE talk. So I’d love to win the book! Thanks! Eileen
Congrats! You won!
You won!
you won!
You won!
You won!
Hooray! Thanks!!
YAY!! Just emailed you 🙂
Seriously… It’s so addicting! I’m so excited (and bummed) that tomorrow is the last episode. I’m pretty sure Jay is hiding way more than he’s letting on…
Jamie, I have loved the three podcast that I have listened to so far. Can’t wait to listen to them all. In your podcast with Jessica thompson I was encouraged when you talked about trick-or-treating with your kids and controlling the amount of candy. I only have a seven month old but I am a control freak about the number of hours he sleeps in a 24 hour period that my husband is going crazy and my mother’s going crazy so I didn’t know if you had ever gone through this too. Or other intense controlling situations with your kids and how you dealt with it?
