Happy Hour #19 is with my friend Gloria Furman. Gloria and her husband have four kid and live in Dubai, where they started a church. I met Gloria a few months ago at the Gospel Coalition Conference, although we had been internet friends for a while. She's just as lovely in person as she is online and that is what makes me love her. Gloria has written two books, GLIMPSES OF GRACE: TREASURING THE GOSPEL IN YOUR HOME and TREASURING CHRIST WHEN YOUR HANDS ARE FULL: GOSPEL MEDITATIONS FOR BUSY MOMS.
Gloria has a real heart for women to know Jesus and be fully captivated by him. She says, “I want to be obsessed with what I’m going to be obsessed with three zillion years from now—seeing and savoring Jesus.”
{You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour by subscribing through your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Stitcher). And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!}
Show notes:
– Gloria gives me a lesson in how to pronounce Australian cities, because at the time of recording this Aaron was in Australia for 12 days.
– Gloria teaches me “God's mercies are new every morning, and it's always morning somewhere” and I need this printed on something in my house!
– They just celebrated their six year “sand-aversary” as of living in Dubai
– We discuss things that no longer bother you after having kids and I can't believe that Gloria has a dustbuster in her car – which I need to get on this stat. My car is so dirty, this could solve my problem.
– Gloria is working on a new book that will come out in the Spring called, THE PASTOR'S WIFE, that's about learning along the way and encouraging wives of men in the ministry. Oh I can't wait until this comes out!
– There are 60 different countries represented at her church and this has been challenging and wonderful for Gloria in her ministry.
– Here's the podcast that I mentioned that Gloria and I recorded this summer for VERGE WOMEN
– We talk about having an eternal perspective through all of life, and especially through our motherhood and looking for the joy in all of life's circumstances.
– Gloria says that the book Live Like a Narnian helped her see the themes of God throughout the books
– I say that you should read a book before you see the movie, but Aaron doesn't agree. Your thoughts on this?
What Gloria & I are reading now:
Gloria: Dispatches from the Front by Tim Keesee
Evangelism in the Early Church by Michael Green
The King and His Beauty by Thomas Schreiner – Gloria says that the epilogue in this book is perfect for a new believer because it gives the scope of scripture, and will help them see where they fall in the whole redemptive story.
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Jamie: The Silver Chair by C.S Lewis with my kids

Gloria is graciously giving away a copy of each of her books to someone. So, in a week I'll pick two winners and you'll get one of her books. How nice! I have read GLIMPSES OF GRACE and loved it, so I know that you guys will love these books as well!
To win, all you need to do is leave a comment.
Super easy! See you guys next week where my guest will be Kate Conner and as usual with all of my guests you will LOVE her!
I met Gloria and her husband 5 years ago when I was visiting a friend in Kansas City, so random! I’ve followed her since and love hearing about what God is doing through their family and church. And you should check out Naptimes Diaries New Mercies print! It’s beautiful! I have it hanging in my house.
I used to think you should read the book before seeing the movie, but after consistently being let down over and over by the movies being nothing like the book, I decided to give up my long-held belief! I now say, see away! You’ll probably enjoy the movie a lot more if you *haven’t* read the book!! (that said, Gone Girl could potentially sway me back to the other side…I hear it’s really, really good)….
Thank you so much! I loved what Gloria said about wanting to be obsessed or consumed with what we will be consumed with sooo many years from now! Great perspective!
Jamie, I must admit I have been “bingeing” on your podcasts!! I have been spending a lot of time in my car lately, and actually have been looking forward to those times more than ever, doin can see who the next guest will be-I love how you and your guests invite us in like we are close and dear friends of yours-it is a pleasure and a refreshment to listen in!! I was waiting anxiously for the latest podcast to post!! Looking forward to listening in!! Thank you for being you!!

I have been blessed by God’s love and truth spoken through Gloria. Her compassionate and honest words encourage me as I grow in the Lord and as a wife and Mom to 3 young sons. I would love to read one of her books and soak in more wisdom. Thank you Jamie.

Wow, Jamie, I learned so much from your conversation with Gloria. I was particularly struck by what she said about learning to ground everything she does in the Word. In order to do that, we must know the Word. Thank you for sharing your conversation!

I LOVE the happy hour podcasts. They are great company on a run, I feel like I am in a conversation without having to actually use my breath to talk 🙂 And I find all the conversations so inspiring and encouraging. All us Mom’s need to feel part of the village and the happy hour does that. Thanks Jamie!
