My guest for Happy Hour #75 is Liz Bohannon, the creator and Co-CEO of Sseko Designs.
In our conversation, we chat about her experience at the live taping of This American Life and how she realized she had malaria in the middle of it (what!?). If you don't know what it feels like to have malaria, Liz will tell you and you're going to want to make sure you use your mosquito nets next time you're in a malaria-prone area.
She shares her story of quitting her job in the middle of the recession to pack up and move to Uganda. I loved hearing her journey of arriving in Africa with no where to go and no real plans, getting linked up with an organization developing future leaders, and (long story short) created Sseko Designs to create opportunities for the graduates of the program. Sseko is a for-profit company and I thought Liz's perspective on the for-profit world versus non-profit world was so compelling, and I think will spark a lot of discussion.
And lastly, y'all know one of my family's favorite shows is Shark Tank. Liz and her husband were on the show!! So, a definite highlight of our conversation was hearing her experience behind the scenes, taking on the sharks and still holding her head high and confident about an ethically-run company, in spite of rejection on national television. You're just going to love it.
{You can listen to the show HERE. And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends. Just use the FB & Twitter links at the end of this post!}

Pine Cove
It's still winter(ish), but now is the time to be thinking about your summer plans and you must consider Pine Cove camps! Here’s why camp ministry is awesome: your kids get a whole week away from technology to be out in God’s creation, they get to be pushed out of their comfort zone with fun activities like high ropes courses, zip lines, and horseback riding. Pine Cove scours the nation for the most excellent, intentional, Jesus-loving college students to invest in your kids for a week as their counselors. We’ve sent our kids to Pine Cove for years now, and they always come back with so many stories of what they learned about the Bible and how they felt so loved by the staff. Pine Cove takes safety seriously, and as a mom myself I trust them completely with my kids. You can find out more information about Pine Cove on their website at pinecove.com.

Jamie, LOVE your podcast. I have learned so much by listening to such wise, interesting women, all while I edit photos for my photography business! Really loved listening to your conversation with Liz – so fascinating to hear her perspective about being on Shark Tank. I remember that episode and I found it so interesting to hear the details behind the scenes. Keep up the great interviews, Jamie! Hope to have the opportunity to meet you one day. Any chance you are going to the Influence Network conference in Charlotte in April?
I’m a BIG FAN of Liz Bohannon! So fun to hear her story in detail and her concept of how we can really come alongside our brothers and sisters in other countries or even just down the street! Really enjoy your podcasts!
I have heard Liz’s story several times through other events and podcasts and love it every time! It is so great to hear someone who knows we cannot do any of this without Christ!
I loved this episode! I love the way Liz just showed up in Uganda with basically no plan and what a beautiful story and mission has come out of it! Her story makes me want a Shark Tank spin off for companies like hers and so many others who’s main purpose isn’t for profit but for people. I would watch that!
