Happy Hour #45 is with my new friend Shannan Martin. Shannan Martin is a writer who found her voice in the country and her story in the city. She and her jail chaplain husband, Cory, have four funny children who came to them across oceans and rivers. Having sold their dream farmhouse, they now live entrenched in community on the wrong side of the tracks. They’re surprised every day by God’s goodness.
On today's show Shannan and I talk about her family and all of her kids come to their family (one at the age of 16). Shannan and I chat about how God has changed her family's life and mission over the past few years. You will be encouraged by Shannan in this episode!
{You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour by subscribing through your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Stitcher). And of course, I would love if you would share with your friends!}

Fund the Nations helps people fundraise for their adoption, mission trip, or cause by creating custom, low cost t-shirts for them to sell. Their custom design work is always free and they set it up where you pre-sell the shirts, so whether you sell 25 or 250, you’re guaranteed to make money off of it because every shirt you purchase has already been paid for! They’ve worked with organizations like Compassion International and Lifeline Childrens Services and thousands of families just like yours. Helping raise over $1 million per year in fundraising, they’d love to help you fund your calling!
Thoroughly enjoyed this episode as we are about to adopt our first child- almost 14-yr old boy from Central America. It’s so encouraging to hear from someone who has adopted an older child and dealing with well-meaning opinions of others. She’s right- if God lead us to open home then we need to do it. I know what she means when she says this is not what they expected, but it’s so much better than their plans. Will definitely keep eye out for her book. It was also funny to hear someone mention Trampled By Turtles- recently heard them in concert as well!
FAVORITE PODCAST YET!!!!!! Why I liked the interview with Shannon: Talked about living the Christian American dream and how that “calling” in her life was not from God. Also talked about feeling purposeless when life is calm. THANKS JAMIE AND SHANNON!
Jamie… I can’t get enough of your podcast! Every single show is just so much fun to listen to and such an encouragement in my walk with the Lord. My reading list is intimidatingly long now and I need your help! I am heading to Mexico in a couple weeks for a relaxing vacation with my husband and I would love for you to tell me which book I should take with me!! Pretty please!
Love this episode. My husband and I have 2 children adopted from overseas, one from Russia and one from Haiti. We just completed our adoption of our son from Haiti 1 month ago. Our daughter was adopted in 2010 at the age of 1 from Russia. We are so blessed that God chose us to be their parents. We have no doubt that both of these children were chosen by God for us. I can’t wait to listen to other episodes.
So I am reading this book and I’m only on page 9 and I absolutely LOVE IT! I could have sworn it was one Shannon Martin mentioned in this episode so I came here to find her and you and say thanks! But it’s not here in your links! Now I don’t know where I got the book idea from! Haha. It’s called Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese. Already know I will recommend it!
Not sure we talked about in this episode, but I’ve talked about it before because it’s ONE OF MY FAVORITES EVER!!! LOVE that book so much! Enjoy!
Thanks so much and happy parenting!
Ah so glad you love the show! I also LOVE LOVE LOVE Mexico and we usually get away there about once a year. It’s a dream!
Books … oh gracious. If you like fiction I would go with maybe The Good Girl or The Girl on a Train. I loved To Kill A Mockingbird (Yes I probably was supposed to read in high school but don’t remember a thing about it!)
Check out my instagram hashtag for all I have read this year: #Jamies2015reading
I’m listening to this episode right now and had to chime in! “All the Light We Cannot See” is awesome! Yes, it’s a big book, but the chapters are only a few pages long. It’s perfect for the way moms have to read 🙂
LOVED this! Was great putting a voice to one of my newest Instagram people. Thanks for being great company on a Fri night.
