The very hilarious Sophie Hudson is back today for episode #146 of The Happy Hour. Sophie joined me for episode #54 and for The Happy Half Hour #8. She's one of my favorite guests and she's back today to chat about our recent travels to Kenya with Compassion International.
On today's show, Sophie and I recount several of our favorite stories from Kenya and how they impacted our lives. We chat about visiting the slums (you'll find some pictures below), meeting our sponsored children and their families and seeing how Compassion is changing the lives of children all over the world through the local church.
And of course, we can't talk to Sophie without a few hysterical moments – so you'll hear her story of monkeys robbing her pistachios, a van ride neither of us will soon forget and my inability to control my bladder. It's a show you won't want to miss.
And again, I strongly encourage you to consider sponsoring a child through Compassion. For just $38 a month, you can change the course of a family's lives forever. Go here to sign up today.

Sorry about that! It’s corrected now.
You have no idea how much better I feel about my bladder! #1 reason that I’ve never traveled internationally is that fear that I’m gonna need to GO and not have a place to! Thanks for being REAL.
What a fun show! I laughed so hard
Oh my goodness I just got back from Nairobi, Kenya a week and a half ago and I feel like we were on the same trip!!! No. 1 Did y’all go into the Kibera Slum? We did a sports camp with a school in the Kibera Slum. The children and their families stole our hearts! They were filled with overwhelming joy in Jesus and such sweetness in their spirit that you do not always see in America.
No. 2 – Those roads in Africa! We had a 5 and a half hour drive to our safari on those stop and go roads…I felt like I was going to be on that road for eternity. Not to mention it had rained the day before we drove back and while I was closing my eyes trying to think about anything else other than that road…our driver (who had his window open) drove through a ton of mud water that splashed in the car on me, covering me head to toe. We still had 4 hours left to drive and I was the only one in the safari car covered in mud water.
No.3 The monkeys getting into the tent and eating the nuts. When I went on safari last year we stayed in tented camps probably very similar to y’alls. One night, a guy on our team had gone back to his family’s tent to shower and while he was showering a little rain storm rolled in. Well, we had heard that when it rains often times random animals will come near the grounds because they know it’s shelter. So, we all run back to our tents to get out of the rain and sure enough we see little monkeys and a couple gazelles roaming around the camp areas. BUT. Later that night after the rain finished everyone on our team met back at the dining area for dinner, and this guy who had gone to shower during the storm shows up to dinner looking like he had seen a ghost. He tells us how he got out of the shower and walked into the main part of his tent and there was a GIANT baboon standing on his bed going through his stuff. He said he froze and in a split second had to decide what to do. So, while only having a towel wrapped around his waist, he lets go and screams at the baboon at the top of his lungs and sure enough the thing ran away. So yes, y’all’s warning to not bring items that might appeal to monkeys was very wise…I mean the guys tent was fully zipped up and the baboon was able to unzip it and get in.
I loved this podcast so much! And it brought back such vivid and fond memories I have had in Kenya. It is a place dear to my heart and I love when I hear people who feel the same.
