I'm gonna be honest with you about reading to my kids. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. I started out as a parent claiming my goals of reading to them every single night, and honestly when I had less kids and they were smaller I did do that a lot. We would sit around and read the Jesus Storybook Bible before bed, and then head off to bed. Now that they are older and different ages I don't get to read to them all as much. I've thought about laying in bed with each of them and reading, but that would make bedtime approximately 2 hours long and that is just plain torture for parents.
Lately we have been reading ALONE YET NOT ALONE, and the boys are truly loving it. Usually this gets read after Story is in bed, and I am actually glad about that because it's a tad bit old for her. This story is based on a true story and it's about a family in Pensylvania in the 17oo's that comes face to face with tragedy during the French and Indian War and the devastating raid known as the Penn's Creek Massacre.
This book is rich is historical details and it's a book like none other that I've read to my children. They have enjoyed visualizing the lives on the Indians and the family as they struggle with each other. This book is written by Tracy Leninger Craven and I actually have one to give away to you!
You can even keep the rule that we have … read the book before you see the movie because this movie comes out soon as well.

I feel the same way about reading to my kids. In theory, I love the idea but prolonging bedtime. No can do. We read Big Picture story bible to the littles and Ten Girls Who Changed the World (and other volumes) to our big girls sometimes.
I liked them on FB! 🙂
Sounds like a consensus. 🙂 I love the idea of reading to my kids but, like you, as they’ve gotten older (10 and 13) it seems to have gone by the wayside. In the past we’ve read Beverly Cleary (mostly Ralph the Mouse series), Little House on the Prairie series, and a slew of Hank the Cowdog. Since they’re getting older, I just ordered (at the suggestion of We Are That Family blog) “Running for My Life: One Lost Boy’s Journey from the Killing Fields of Sudan to the Olympic Games.” I’ve heard it’s life changing – can’t wait to read it! Thanks for the fun giveaway!
Sounds like a great book! I’ve read the Chronicles of Narnia to my kids, and we are working our way through the Hobbit. My husband and sons read Redwall (not my favorite but they liked it!) I’ve also read some missionary biographies to the kids. Same as you, I found it easier when they were younger. I’m not always consistent, but I try and I love getting good suggestions – so thanks! 🙂
We read The Boxcar Children this summer. I’m hoping to start the Little House on the Prairie series soon. Always looking for good book suggestions!
I liked alone, yet not alone on fb.
