I was reading Stephanie's adoption blog today and came across this and had to share with you. Stephanie and her husband are missionaries in Chili and are in the begining stages of adoption from Haiti.
You hear about surprise pregnancy (um … Cayden) but do you ever hear of surprise adoptions ???? If so, it might go something like this ….
– –Honey, sit down. I have some news for you.
– –What is it?
– –Well, I don't know how to say this, so I'll just come out with it. I went out to the mailbox today and … well, we got an I-171H.
– –A what?!? An I-171H? As in, we're going to have another baby?!?
– –It looks that way.
– –But how? We've been so careful! I put away all the blank I-600A forms. Didn't you hide our home study update?
– –Of course I did. But don't forget, there was that one night …
– –What night? (Pauses) Oh, that night. But it was only once. We were just messing around. I didn't print clearly. I didn't even use ink! (Pauses again) But it was kind of fun.
– –(Giggles) it was, wasn't it? I'll never forget how cute you looked getting your fingerprints.
– –So now we've got our I-171H, eh? But that doesn't always mean you'll adopt, does it? I mean, shouldn't you see the agency or something, make sure everything is okay?
– –I already did.
– –And?
– –I'm five documents along.
– –Five documents! And they're all notarized, certified and authenticated okay?
– –Just great. There was one small scare when the agency couldn't see the notary's middle initial, but it showed up just fine under the magnifying glass.
– –Thank goodness. And you honey? Are you feeling okay?
– –I'm feeling fine. As long as I know you're happy about this.
– –Happy? I'm thrilled! It's always a shock at first when something like this happens, but of course I'm happy!
Isn’t it hilarious?! We got a good laugh out of that one … whoever originally wrote it has a great sense of humor!
Btw, did you happen to have a chance to track down numbers/sizes for your t-shirt fundraiser order?
Thx, Stephanie
Bad, hurtful humor. “Accidental pregnancy” is a term that is hurtful to mothers who lose children to adoption as well as adoptees and should not be used, even in jest.
Since time immoral, people have been born as a result of UNPLANNED pregnancies. In fact, it is only in recent times that couples – married or not – could chose to get pregnant or not…but all of this is irrelevant to the subject of adoption.
That’s hilarious!
Sorry to offend you. I never meant to. I myself have experienced 3 unplanned pregnancy’s and they are not fun, but they are just that, accidents. The post was intended to be a source of laughter for people going through the mounds of paperwork for international adoptions. Hear my heart when I say I’m sorry if you were offended, it was not intended.
Dreaming,
Perhaps you accept your pregnancies as accidents. I do not know the outcome of those pregnancies. My unplanned pregnancy produced a child who is very much NOT an accident and I would never want her – nor any adoptee – to see that word used in regards to my/their conceptions or her/them.
The word “accident” brings to MY mind pictures of cars crashing, and that us borne out in its definition: “an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally and usually results in harm, injury, damage, or loss; casualty; mishap: automobile accidents” http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/accident
I hope you will rethink your use of words that can cause pain to others. It is out of concern for the feelings of people that we do not use certain racial slurs,or ethnic identifications. People who are adopted deal with a great deal — people calling them adopted “children” even when they are adults; people asking many insensitive questions and making many assumption; their feelings of abandonment and rejection; being denied the truth of their origins and heritage…I would hope you would not want to add to anyone’s pain.
You are right. Accident is not a good word to use. Once again I apologize and thanks for the great discussion. I changed the above words “accident” and changed them to “surprise” since that is a more suitable word for an unplanned pregnancy – especially in the case of my oldest son Cayden – no accident by God, but a BIG surprise to us!!!!
God has a plan for each child and pregnancy. Although we don’t know it all the time or agree with it God has a plan for everyone.
Two of my pregnancy’s resulted in miscarriage and God has used those in my life. My third pregnancy resulted in my son, and I do know that he was no accident. God designed him perfectly and knew exactly when he would join our family and how it would come about. Although it was not our timing, it was God’s perfect timing. 🙂
My son whom we adopted at birth was also not an accident, neither are the two children we are adopting in from Haiti right now.
I apologize for using the word. Thanks for the healthy discussion.
Jamie, you are a much nicer person than I. I laughed at this post and got it. I was not offened. Please lighten up 4ever!! Laugh a little….or at least try to crack a smile. Lori
Jamie…I got it ….
