Happy Hour #30 is with my new friend Jessica Turner. Jessica and I have known each other online for a bit, and finally met in person recently at the If Gathering, and she's as lovely in person as she is online.
{There's Jessica and I on the left there}
Jessica N. Turner is the founder of the popular lifestyle blog The Mom Creative, where she documents her pursuit of cultivating a life well-crafted. Additionally, she is a writer for HuffPost Parents and DaySpring's (in)courage, an advocate for World Vision, a regular speaker at blogging conferences nationwide, and an award-winning marketing professional. She and her husband, Matthew live with their three young children in Nashville, Tennessee.
In this episode we talk about parenting topics such as going from 2 to 3 kids and how hard that could be. How Jessica feels about working outside the home and that she doesn't receive any guilt from doing that instead of being a stay at home mom. How moms tend to put ourselves last in world of taking care of people in our lives. What date nights look like for the Turner family. We also chat about our latest Netflix binges, and books we're reading. Jessica wrote a post that went viral about moms embracing themselves, their bodies, and wearing that swimsuit each year no matter how we feel about our bodies.

Would love to be reading this book! 🙂
It’s good and I highly recommend! You will even want to read more after you listen to her on the show.
Iced in in TN. Wish I had a good book to read!
I would love to win this book. I have lots of hobbies that get pushed aside because of lack of time and family/work responsibilities.
I would love to win a copy of this book! My word of the year is focus and a big part of this has been evaluating how I spend my time. I have a feeling this book would give me some great inspiration for that! One thing I have been doing with my fringe hours lately is writing a blog on simple living, faith, and contentment. It’s been such a blessing to be creative again! Thanks Jessica for the giveaway and Jamie for such a fantastic podcast.
I’m excited to check out The Fringe Hours! I have a two year old and eight month old and still trying to figure out how to get things done.
In my fringe hours, I am going to resurrect my blog!
In my fringe hours I want to get some books knocked off my TBR list, and finish my 2 year old’s first year baby book before he turns 3 in September and notices his brother and sister both have books.
I’m a huge fan of The Happy Hour and would LOVE to win a copy of Jessica’s book. It is on my “maternity leave reading list” for my little girl due in about a month!
E
I am planning to read lots of books during my Fringe Hours.
listened today while doing dishes. loved hearing your guys’ thoughts on being truthful with your kiddos! such good wisdom.
I’m using my fringe hours to learn Spanish because we are in the process of adopting two sweet girls from South America!
Hey Jamie,
I’m going to start a little book club here in Tyler for pine cove wives and anyone living in these trenches! Maybe we will call it happy hour;) complete with mimosas!
LOVED this episode! Really wanting to read this book. I’m single with no family, but I know I don’t use my fringe hours appropriately (social media, anyone?!?!). Would love to make this a priority to change the way I view my days so that they aren’t wasted. If I dont win it here I will definitely be buying it to add to my bookshelf!
I love listening and I plan to use my Fringe Hours to read up on the titles suggested by the guests in the podcast, started defending Jacob (recommended on the podcast) last night!
Thanks Jamie!
I think The Fringe Hours is just what I need at this stage in my life! Stay at home mama to 3, actively seeking what I want to do when I “grow-up.” (AKA…when all my littles are in school!) You and your guests are ALWAYS an inspiration to me. So fun!
Loved this episode! I’ve been hearing a lot about this book, so it’s recently been added to my “To Read” list. In my fringe hours, I would love to learn to sew and spend some time sprucing up our home decor. Thanks so much for the chance to win!
Love this! And I think I want to use my fringe hours writing or doing pottery!
THANK YOU FOR TALKING ABOUT SLUM LOVE ON YOUR PODCAST. I have literally been praying for Nairobi, Kenya for 3 years not knowing why… something about God wanting to bring living water to that spot of the world. Literally, though I know I am not to be a missionary there or anything, God has constantly spoken Kenya into my ears when I’m praying and has been burdening my heart to just PRAY for Nairobi though there’s no logical reason for me to…. I’m not like a prayer warrior for other countries like some Christians are… interesting. I am looking into Slum Love and am grateful SOMEONE is ministering to those wonderful and LOST people!! Thanks!!
I listened to the podcast of the two of you today. You were talking about being at the beach and swimming with your kids. For Jessica’s kids their memory was of their Mom swimming with them. That struck a cord with me. I have three boys and I get stuck in shame because of my body image. I would like to move past this to be healthy for me and for them. Most moms in Southern California just get in the water because they have to pee…I want to get in the water and make memories with my family.
My fringe hours are spent reading! Would love to win this book!
Jamie! Thank you SO much for doing these podcasts. I don’t remember how I found them but I LOVE them so much. I’m currently living in India so it is so nice to listen to your podcasts and feel like I’m hanging out with sweet and funny and inspiring girlfriends. It definitely helps when I’m missing community plus y’all keep me up to date on what’s happening back in the states…
I loved this interview! I’ll definitely be checking the book out, it sounds awesome. I love that she gives permission to take care of yourselves. So good.
Thanks again and keep them coming!
Great podcast! I’m really enjoying your conversations with these amazing women. I’d like to use my fringe hours to read more. Looking forward to reading Jessica’s book!
I always get so excited when I see that you have a new podcast posted!! Need to read The Fringe Hours-love her attitude of grace and care for mamas. And loved the fiction recommendations! Thanks for always brightening my day!
Can’t wait to read The Fringe Hours! I’ve already heard such good things about it! And love the book recommendations! I’ll be checking those out this week. Love your podcast, Jamie. Thanks so much for sharing your heart and your friends! Much love from Indiana.
Love the podcast! I’m figuring out life as a part time college student & full time mom & love the encouragement!
lived this podcast!
I’m hoping to get back my fringe hours this year and spend time writing & blogging again.
inam trying to eat more whole, healthy foods so that I have more energy in the fringe hours and get more accomplished. Thanks for this opportunity!
I’d use my fringe hours to write more. In the last few years I’ve found how therapeutic writing is for me and I need to make more time for that!
It was a great chat to listen in on. Thanks for the fun interviews you do. This year I’m using fringe hours for reading and just sitting with myself in the quiet when I can.
Definitely on my “to be read” list for 2015! Love that she talks about this book being for women at all stages, not just a particular subset. We all have fringe hours, even if they look different. I know I could benefit from learning to use mine better. Loved the podcast as always!
I so enjoyed this episode! Now that my baby is getting a little older and (knock on wood) following a more predictable schedule, I feel like I can carve out some fringe hours for myself!
Also jamie, I apologize if this is answered already somewhere, but can you tell me about your intro song? It’s so catchy and I’d love to hear the full song!
Loved this podcast! And I’d love to read this book! I struggle with the fringe hours – with a 2 year old and a new, very time consuming business, I need all the help I can get!
Inspired by your guests, I’m writing a book in my fringe hours!! And if Jessica is as busy as she is and can do it, I’m encouraged I can too!! I would so love to read this, to be inspired! I’m home all day with four kids…..so I need some coaching on how to utilize my fringe hours!
As always, I loved this podcast and listen to Happy Hour every week!!!!!!
Listening right now and had to stop to say YES to the Bletchley Circle. I had to stay up past my 10 pm bedtime to binge watch the whole first season. I love when a show can make you feel frightened without any gore or grossness. Like a good Hitchcock film.
Would love to win the book! I want to use my fringe hours on something productive and not just binge watching Netflix (which I’m sure I will still do plenty of). Blogging and exercising come to mind first.
Hey Kasey,
I’ve met you a couple times…used to work at Pine Cove, as of about a month ago. If this happens I would love to join! I’ve been trying to get a book club together for a while in Tyler.
This was one of my favorite episodes yet. I’m in a season when I feel like I have the capacity to figure how to do this well, and I don’t want to waste that time!
This is a book club I want to come to!
I’m glad I found your podcast! I love to craft and read during my fringe hours.
LOVE this podcast … loved meeting Jamie at Shine conference in Austin in January, you make everyone feel like they’re your friend and neighbor …. I wish I was your neighbor, and love that I can “hang out with you” on this podcast.
One thing I want to use some of my FRINGE HOURS for in 2015 is to READ more! I want to read FRINGE HOURS first, so I hope I win it!
Yay for new books!
I’m a relatively new podcast listener, but I am hooked. And your interview with Jessica was awesome! I can’t wait to get a copy of her book. This year, I hope to use my fringe hours to continue my blog, read more and invest in friendships.
Laughing because my oldest has a Jan. 1 birthday – he loves it because there is always football on his birthday! Would love to get a copy of Jessica’s book – love the idea of having time for creative work.
would love a free copy of FringeHours…plan to spend mine in 2015 reading and finally prying our family photos into digital books.
Would love to win a free copy of FringeHours..plan to spend mine in 2015 reading and organizing family photos into digital books.
I would use my fringe hours to read, refresh myself, meditate, and nap!!! Thanks so much for offering this. I’ve been wanting this book ever since I first saw it!
I love to use my fringe hours to read and write. I write poetry, blogs, tinker with someday books, but I long to put word to page and read how others have done it.
Jessica’s book rang true for me! I am a busy working wife and would love to read a book which speaks to developing space to cultivate passions and honoring gifts that God gives. I hope to write more and develop time for cooking.
I need to use my fringe hours to get my house in order, work on my wellness consulting business, and writing.
Congrats you won!
Congrats you won!
congrats you won!
Thanks for the girl talk as I made dinner with one hand and bounced a crabby teething baby on my hip with the other hand. I can’t wait to check out some of these book recommendations. With two little ones around its hard to make time to read but like you talked about, I know how important it is for my own self care. One thing I’m so excited about when we visit austin this summer is signing up for a library card (you have to do it in person, boo) so that I can check out books on my kindle. Our English book options are pretty limited over here but thank goodness for technology! Hope you are having a great time in Uganda!
